KHURSHID ALAM SALEEM

Khurshid Alam Saleem (b. 1950, Bangladesh) is a prominent modernist painter whose work occupies a defining place in the development of abstraction in Bangladeshi and South Asian art. A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, Saleem forged a visual language grounded in lyrical abstraction, geometric balance, and a sophisticated command of colour. His paintings merge intuitive gesture with structural harmony, creating meditative fields where memory, spirituality, and the metaphysical quietly unfold. Throughout his five-decade career, Saleem has remained unwavering in his commitment to abstraction, pioneering a path at a time when figuration dominated the country's art scene and thereby influencing generations of artists who followed. Saleem's achievements reflect both national and international recognition. In 2008, he was honoured at the Beijing Olympic Fine Arts Exhibition with an Olympic Gold Medal and commemorative torch as an invited international artist. His international standing was further affirmed with the prestigious Club for UNESCO Award (Greece, 2013) for his contribution to global artistic dialogue. With an extensive exhibition history—marked by over fifty solo exhibitions worldwide, including a landmark 50th solo show in New York in 2012—Saleem has presented his work across Asia, Europe, and North America, including notable exhibitions in Beijing, Washington D.C., and The Hague. Today, Khurshid Alam Saleem stands as one of the seminal figures who shaped the language of contemporary abstraction in Bangladesh. His work continues to embody a contemplative, refined, and transformative vision, securing his legacy as a master of modern South Asian art.
