MUNIRA NAQUI

Munira Naqui (b. 1955) was born in Chattogram, a coastal town along the Bay of Bengal, now Bangladesh. She left her homeland in 1974 to study Economics at Moscow State University and later moved to the United States in 1982. Since 1993, Maine has been her home, where she lives in Portland and maintains her studio in New Gloucester. Munira furthered her education at the University of Pennsylvania and through the Maine College of Art's Continuing Studies programs. Her artistic practice, rooted in abstraction, explores space, geometry, and silence through a refined minimalist language. Working primarily in painting and mixed media, her compositions balance precision and emotion, evoking a meditative sense of order and light. Naqui's work has been widely exhibited in galleries across the United States and internationally. She has been a regular participant in the Salon Réalités Nouvelles in Paris, France, and exhibits with Gallery Nine in Amsterdam, Netherlands, which also represents her. Beyond her studio practice, Munira Naqui is the founder of The Drawing Collective, an international group of more than 30 artists from 14 countries, united by a shared commitment to drawing as a contemporary and conceptual medium.
